In an age before psychology was a modern scientific field, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (November 11, 1821 – February 9, 1881) was a Russian writer of realist fiction and essays that explored the depths of the human psyche. Known for acclaimed novels Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoyevsky's work discusses the human mind in a world full of political and social upheaval in 19th century Russia, becoming the forerunner of existentialism.
His most famous work was Crime and Punishment, first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. Dostoyevsky wrote the great novel after five years of exile in a labor camp in Siberia, forced there by the Tsar. Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who theorizes that he can perform good deeds to counterbalance his crime, justifying his actions by referencing Napoleon Bonaparte. The novel is considered one of the greatest novels ever written.

Let me start with a note on the title.This is the old Constance Garnett translation which I think is unfashionable now.It has long since become fashionable to call this novel The Devils, which I think makes more sense particularly given the biblical passage quoted near the end.Now apparently there is a tendency to call the novel The Demons.As a matter of nuance ,I don't think that's right.The Possessed is set in 1870's Russia and presents a society in the process of having a collective nervous breakdown. Dostoyevsky clearly believed that Russia had been infected by the West and this infection was rotting the country to its core.At a time when Russia was inhabited overwhelmingly by peasants, the characters here are aristocrats, low level intelligentsia and "middle class".Radical chic reigns supreme and wealthy aristocrats without the slightest interest in social or political change mouth radical cliches in a desire to be fashionable. Merchants who you might think would devote themselves to the task of making money talk of Fourier.The young rich act like ironic hipsters. Religious purity expresses itself through an existential obsession with choice , suicide and the nature of being. Dostoyevsky insists that this is not only a dead end but the beginning of the end and juxtaposes , what he clearly sees as evil and nonsense, to what he sees as the way to redemption through orthodoxy and a return to God even if you don't quite believe it.It's either or.( and again if you doubt that re read the biblical passages quoted near the end and think about Stefan Trifomovetch's death and it's significance).
I don't see Dostoyevsky as the funniest writer around but there is a fair amount of humor here.He deplores what he depicts but can't deny it's comical.His analysis is also quite astute in some ways .The revolutionaries aren't rallying the workers and seizing power .They are boring within.The key is to discredit and mock all that is sacred.The transvaluation of values is key here.All that is solid doesn't merely melt in to air .It is turned to garbage.With that the revolution follows.

It is very different absolute classic book, difficult to read but rich in historical, socioeconomic and philosophical information about Russia. The author really explored the human nature, human condition.Highly recommended.
It takes a while to get the characters organized in your mind's eye, but thereafter the reading goes along well. All human frailties are exposed in the late 19th Century Russian genre. I don't want to write too much more since some smart dude will take my view and use ti as part of his book report for a book he should have, could have, would have read if he had more time, no? ha!
A study in contrasts between the sources of nihilism and of socialism. Dostoevsky has a rare gift of staging scenes with many crazy characters getting to the bottom of everything, and these Devils are his perfect study of corruption in the midst of society. For foreigners, it's helpful to keep a list of the characters' names and roles in order to follow their intrigues as they appear and disappear in this story. Google the novel for a basis of such a list.
This was a fascinating novel about the philosophy, individual influences, and events taking place long before the Russian Revolution, as well as vivid descriptions of several characters who played a part in the intrigue. The author described events which took place in and around provinces near St. Petersburg, Russia, in the late 19th century. Some of the events were based on actual facts, but names and situations were changed by the author. This was one of the few works that I could not put down....it was a true page-turner.
Dostoyevsky's writing can be a bit verbose at times, but it doesn't seem to hurt his portrayals of the people he writes about. Although the story describes some very grim topics (murder, suicide, arson, mental illness, and evil deeds of ruthless power-seekers), it also painted a colorful and (I believe) truthful picture of 19th century Russian life among the poor and wealthy inhabitants of the St. Petersburg environs. The author individualized each of the many characters in this story and gave them distinct personalities; I felt that I was almost an eye witness to important historic events as well as peoples' ordinary lives.
I very highly recommend this book.
On nearly every page words are run together with no spacing. The dimly printed illustrations have no relation to the text, like one showing an American Indian encampment. No footnotes translating Stepan Verkhovenkky's extensive use of French. Does not include the important last chapter "Stavrogin"s Confession". No ISBN, no publisher, no translator. Only on the last page at bottom it says, "Made in the USA, San Bernardino CA, 30 January 2018. The day after I ordered it.
This nice edition replaces the paperback I gave away. THE POSSESSED, as most know, predicts the why and how of the Soviet horror to come. Dostoyevsky was a wonderful writer and, as with THE IDIOT and THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, prescient. The Heritage Press volumes are nicer and cheaper than the modern printings. This is a used book (which is a plus with me; as Pasternak says in DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, no one is first along a pilgrim path), and is exactly as advertised.
I bought this for my book club. Font is good readable size. I was surprised at the many typos. Also, most important, this edition does not contain the APPENDIX- Nikolai's confession. It is crucial to understanding and discussing the book. Originally,though, Dostoevsky did not publish the appendix. It was found after his death among his papers, translated by Virginia Woolf and others, finally published as an appendix. Fortunately I had also downloaded the Barnes and Noble Classic Series edition to my Nook, which did have the appendix.
